What is Targeted Hygiene?

I was delighted to be invited to give a presentation to the Food Standards Agency on Targeted Hygiene.

Targeted Hygiene is all about when and where hygiene actions can make a real impact to help to reduce risks of infections. Interestingly, Targeted Hygiene can actually save time and resources, for example when I worked with the UK government on hygiene protocols for COP26, we removed the need to do a deep clean every night and morning, but asked for targeted hygiene measures after meetings and at desks. See the IFH report here.

One part of Targeted Hygiene is handwashing as well as surface disinfection. Too often, we are told about the need to “wash hands thoroughly or frequently” without any reference to when this should happen. It becomes a throw away line in advice about controlling infections, but the timing is in fact critical.

I am passionate to help people understand the “journey of the germ” so they can understand when they need to spend precious time and resources taking Targeted Hygiene actions. Understanding when to take action helps people become resilient – it means they can apply the logic of how to break the chain of infection as and when circumstances demand action to reduce risks.
