Clean Floors, Healthy Home: Why my iRobot and Bissell Are a Smart Hygiene Duo
If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know I talk a lot about Targeted Hygiene which is all about focusing your cleaning efforts on the most critical areas of the home, like hands, food surfaces, and high-touch points. So, it might surprise you to see me talking about floors.
But hear me out—there are some very good reasons to keep your floors clean, especially in busy households:
- 👶 Babies and toddlers crawl, sit, and play on floors—what’s on the floor ends up on their hands (and in their mouths).
- 🐾 Pet hair doesn’t just stay put—it floats, drifts, and can land in kitchen drawers or on food prep surfaces.
- 🤧 Dust mite poo (yes, really) is a common allergen. The less dust around, the better for allergy sufferers.
- 😬 And let’s be honest—dirty floors are just gross. No one wants to walk barefoot on crumbs or mystery fluff. And in my seaside home, there is the dreaded sand as well!
Meet Kevin: My Surprisingly Brilliant iRobot Vacuum
I’ll admit it—I was very sceptical about whether a robot could vacuum effectively and efficiently. I thought it might be one of those gadgets that’s fun for a few days, then ends up at the back of the cupboard.
How wrong I was! I can’t do without Kevin, my new cleaner.
- 📱 Works from an app: I can switch Kevin on remotely, and once he’s mapped the house, I can select specific areas for him to clean. Furthermore, I can schedule him to do the cleaning when I am out.
- 🛋️ Gets under the sofas (which is more than many humans do!).
- 🔋 Self-charging: When he runs low on battery, he scuttles back to his charging base.
- 🧹 Self-emptying: He even shoots the compacted dust into a compartment, ready for next time.
- 📲 Sends updates: Yes, Kevin texts me about his progress!
Okay, he can’t do the skirting boards or ceilings, but Kevin works tirelessly to keep dust and pet hair at bay. I can do a bit of dusting now and again, but he keeps the floors very clean – with no effort at all from me. That gives me more time to focus on Targeted Hygiene – cleaning and disinfecting where it really counts.
Bissell Carpet Cleaner: Deep Clean, Deep Comfort
While Kevin handles the daily dust, the Bissell carpet cleaner is my go-to for a deeper refresh of carpets and upholstery. It’s especially useful for:
